I want to post some pics to my profile but they are 2500 KB, so Tribe won't let me. How can I make them smaller? I'm not all that technical, so break it down for me if you could.

Re: making electronic pics "smaller"
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 8:12 PMI use a free program called Infranview.
www.irfanview.com/
You can compress photos individually or batch them. You give it a % to reduce it by and wala! Works like a charm. You kinda have to guess and test the right % based on your pics, but once you get it, it's quick and easy.
select file > batch conversion/rename
Add the files you want to compress
Select a destination to put the output files
Choose an output format (.jpeg) > select Options
Set the save quality to a lower number (try 50 to start)
Check the size of your ouput file... want it smaller? Choose a lower number. -

Re: making electronic pics "smaller"
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 9:06 PMI use the image resizer power tool for Windows XP (Can't find power tools for Vista). It gives you a choice of four different sizes. Not real flexible, but easy to use. You just right click the photo, select the resizer, select the size you want, and it makes a copy in that size. Dusty choice may be more flexible, though. I might try that.

Re: making electronic pics "smaller"
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 10:08 PMOr just dial it down quite a bit. You should have an option for shooting in a smaller size. -

Re: making electronic pics "smaller"
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 10:16 PMScratch that. He's shooting about a 2.5 MB photo, which makes a nice 8 x 10 or larger. That's reasonable. If he's using windows, the image resizer should work great. Pretty much ever setting makes a photo less than 1 MB, which works for emails and Tribe icons and photos.

Re: making electronic pics "smaller"
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 11:07 PMAs was mentioned, the Power Tool for Windows XP. If you're running Vista, the Windows Photo Gallery that comes with it does a very nice job of resizing with options. It works much better for photo organizing than most other free ones. If you're not on a PC, there are free photo organizers which should have an option for resizing. It's sometimes hidden as an option for email.
Always shoot pictures in the best resolution. You can always take them down in size but you can't go the other way.

Re: making electronic pics "smaller"
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 6:40 PMI also use Irfanview - it's far superior to ANYTHING else I've seen, and handles *ALL* image formats (including multi-page ones like TIFF).
OK, it now can handle sound files and movie files too.
Anyway to reduce a single file, just press: CTRL+R (for resize) and I usually go for 600x400 (or near enough) for tribe.
It also has the BEST cropping feature method too.
Just click, move, unclick to do a box roughly where you want it, then move the edges to exact where you want them, looking at the size if that's important, or the ratio of width/height if that's important too.
See what Dusty wrote about saving it to JPG.
I'm not going to try the MicroSoft powertool suggested, my experience tells me that MicroSoft versions of anything are often memory hogs, don't do quite what you want, and are lacking somehow. Totally frustrating. I'll give it a miss, thank you. -

Re: making electronic pics "smaller"
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 7:25 PMMicrosoft Power Toys are slick, and do exactly what you need. They are typically written by Microsoft programmers to do something convenient, helpful or quick and dirty that they need that maybe should have been part of the OS. They have no support from Microsoft but they are so simple they don't need it. I wish there were Vista versions. Typically, on a new computer the first thing I do is install PowerToys and a few free critical utils from sysinternals.com -

Re: making electronic pics "smaller"
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 6:01 PMAh... I misunderstood.
OK, I'll take a look then, but I'll own up to not being a fan of MicroSoft (mainly from an ethics point of view). I was also disgusted by Bill Gates and how he started the company and his business methods - but there again, maybe it's because I feel Capitalism is inherently bad for the long term, harmful to the world, and the majority of people as a whole.
Greed, envy, and pride are three of the seven deadly sins that Capitalism works with - not a good sign of a way of life to me. -
