Desperately need Health advice Asap

I've had a sore throat for a week. Body aches, but no fever the first couple of days. My throat was so sore I couldn't eat anything. And now I have three cold sores on my tongue and lip that won't let me eat either. Throat still hurts a bit, but only when I swallow. Not that bad. I took Motrin for a couple of days for the sore throat and ever since then I now have gas or acid reflux. I am so hungry, but I can't eat. Most substantial thing I've had to eat in five days is a smoothie I had today.

I am not one to get sick very easily and usually get over things quickly. So I have no idea what I freakin have. I have no health insurance, but I may go to a doctor's tomorrow, but I am afraid of how much it's going to cost and that she won't do anything for me.

I don't know what I should do.

Go to the Dr? Wait longer to get over it? How to treat cold sores?

Yep. Go to the Doctor. Unless there are any MDs on this tribe. The not eating is not good, and I imagine your not drinking much or getting much sleep.

No, not getting much sleep. The first couple of nights I couldn't even drink anything and would wake every couple of hours. After the soreness abated a little, and I started taking the Motrin, the next couple of nights every time I woke up (still every couple of hours) I would drink a crap load of water. So I can drink water now, just as long as I don't touch the cold sores when I do it.

For the cold sores...put a raisin on it and hold it there for about 15 minutes. You'll feel a little tingling. After the time is up throw away the raisin. I know it sounds crazy, but it works.

For the sore throat...mix 1/4 c honey with 1/4 cup cider vinegar. Take a couple of tablespoons of it. Careful, it will burn at first but it will coat your throat and has mild antibacterial properties. Take a couple of tablespoons 3 or 4 times a day. You'll feel less sore by the end of the first day.

But still go to the Dr. these are home remedies to ease the discomfort and are not a substitute for proper care. Also, just a reminder that Strep throat can quickly turn into more serious illness so take all your meds exactly as the Dr. recommends.

          I did not know that.

Yeah, if it's strep, which is what it sounds like it might be, you need to go to the doctor. Anything that makes you not able to eat much for five days is bad, bad, bad.

I'd get a bottle of King-size bottle of anti-septic mouthwash. How about brownish-orange colored? No timid gargling. Get the throat involved. Gargling is when you bubble the throat, yes?

I woke up feeling better this morning so I decided not to go to the doctor.

I keep rechecking my symptoms on web md and other websites. Some say I have strep, others say it's most likely viral. My throat is a little sore now, but manageable, I've never had a fever the whole time, but my lymph nodes in my neck are sore.

I'll try the home remedies for the cold sores, they are finally starting to heal. I bought a special foaming mouthwash for it.

I'm just afraid that I'll pay for the doctor and she won't do or give me anything. If it's viral (a nasty cold or similar) they won't give me anything. If it's bacterial then they could give me anti-biotics.

I just don't know what to do. I'm hoping once the cold sores are gone and I can eat proper food again (I'm sticking to smoothies now) that everything else will resolve itself.

After doing more research, I think I have canker sores in my mouth. It would make more sense then cold sores, is explained by certain vitamin deficiencies, and explains why my lymph nodes are sore. Now I have to figure what to do for those.

Swollen lumph nodes are a sign of infection. You might need anti-biotics. It's not a good idea to self-diagnose via a website (or even based on our advice, for that matter). Underrtandable considering the lack of health insurance, though. I'm glad to hear you are feeling better!

          Thank you!
Yeah, I don't really like the idea of diagnosing off websites and all, but I was curious to see if this was a common thing or not. If maybe I am just making a big deal out of nothing. But I appreciate everyone's feedback. Thank you for your concern and advice.

I feel for you. Having to self diagnose because of not having insurance sucks, and we shouldn't have to do it. At the same time, thank heavens we have a place to go to ask these questions and hopefully steer us in the right direction, or at the very least, get a reality check.

It does sound like you have an infection, and if you can fight it off on your own great. Power dose on the vitamins and healthy foods that you think will help... vitamin enriched smoothies if that's all you can stomach. Tons of water laced with water soluable vitamins. Echinacea and herbal suppliments probably won't hurt.

But... cold sores could be a sign of something significant - I've never heard of cold sores associated with strep, but I might know nothing. I'm not suggesting it's an STD, but you can probably find a free clinic that will test you just to rule it out and give you some needed attention. If it were strep, your throat would probably be giving you a lot more trouble. Cold sores are an indication of something viral, and viruses don't go away on their own. If your nodes feel affected, you need to stay on your toes with your symptoms. Sometimes a virus can transform so you think it's gone, and it ends up reappearing later, somewhere else in your body, causing greater damage in the long run.

Anti-inflamatories like motrin or advil might make you feel better, but they will mask symptoms that you should probably pay attention to. Don't go overboard on pain reducers. Listen to your body, don't silence it.

I guess my advice, for what it's worth, is that if you have indications of some kind of serious infection, and if after a few days you're still concerned, then you need to get proper attention. It's in your best interest, and in the best interest of the people around you. Use your resources... find the clinic that will see you. It may be unappealing, and really inconvenient. But the ramifications of having a serious infection go untreated and undiagnosed can be very serious.

Keep us posted on how you feel and what you're doing about it.

            xoxo

I became an herbalist simply because eventually it got to where I could not afford to go to a doctor or take my cats to the vet, and while I do have health insurance now (not forever, though), I'm firmly in the habit of treating at home at the first sign of potential illness. My key weapons are grapefruit seed extract (although I think the pill form changed its formula, it has a slight fragrance now and a different texture and frankly, it doesn't seem to work--but the liquid is still good, just needs lots of dilution) and a super-good immune assistance extract that I used to buy but now have to make myself as the company closed down. Key ingredients in that are yerba mansa, excellent and specific for all kinds of mouth and throat things. I have to get that yerba mansa from Arizona direct from a gatherer there. But a few compounds out there do have it. Much more effective than echinacea and the other typical ones, especially if you've already taken echi for years. It becomes less effective on you.

The thing about grapefruit seed extract is that it is antibacterial *and* antiviral *and* antifungal - kicks ass in all directions. This plus the immune extract have taken care of almost everything I've had for years now. Until recently, when I too got a really strange throat thing that looked and acted like strep (which I've had before and which is going around locally)--though no sores came with mine and I have no knowledge of how to treat canker/cold sores as seem immune to them--anyway, I had that same experience of going to the doctor and being sent away with nothing but a "well, you're certainly coming down with something, hahaha!" and had to go back again next day when it got much worse, go to a different doc at the clinic, who took one look at me and said I don't know what this is but you definitely need to be on antibiotics. Which did clear it up in 3-4 days just like it should. Even though they never figured out what it was.

If you're feeling better and it's starting to resolve in all areas and you have no insurance, it still would be great if you could go (I think it's odd that the sores resulted in the first place--unless this has happened to you before and you have a tendency toward them?) - because these things can indeed "go underground" in your body and wreak some unseen havoc. At the very least please start taking something like the GSE which has clinically proven effects; be sure to dilute it as it says on the label if you use the liquid. Don't put it full strength on your sores as it is very caustic. But a mouthwash with salt and diluted GSE will be good for throat, tonsils and the sores too, without question. Helped me hugely with this strep imposter thing.

Don't forget the zinc. Get some Zicam. Zinc + vitamin C is really great. Also, smoothies ARE proper food, as long as you're using quality ingredients. Avoid dairy, use fresh, seasonal, organic fruits and veggies. My bf likes "green smoothies" which are usually made from organic fruits plus spinach or other leafy green veggie. Great for vitamins and minerals. Even after you are well again, might want to stick with smoothies. Good stuff!

I have heard that many folks have really great results from Apple Cider Vinegar, but it tends to upset my stomach. If it works for you, go for it! If not, hot water with a little citrus juice (lemon is my fav) can really help loosen things up. My mum used to give me spoonfuls of honey with lemon juice, then wash it down with water. Tasted really odd, but for helping my throat and cough and such.

And yeah, use the anti-inflammatories sparingly. No ibuprofen on an empty stomach, for sure!

Hugs and blessings. Feel better soon!

    Um strep throat, hello??

Strep will only go away with antibiotics and go see a doctor.

I'm feeling better thank you. Everything's back to normal. No sore throat, no sore lymph nodes, and only a very tiny sore on my tongue, but it doesn't hurt anymore and I can eat normally again. I appreciate everyone's advice and concern. It was just such an odd assortment of symptoms that I had no idea what I really had. But thankfully everything's gone, I even dropped about ten pounds from not eating for the week.
