Deviated Septum surgery - what am I getting into?

topic posted Sat, March 22, 2008 - 3:27 PM by  offlineSnake
Im having my deviated septum fixed next week, along with removing some bone fragments and cleaning up scar tissue.
I know it will hurt and Im trying to get prepared for that, I started getting nervous over the last few days.

I know every ones healing times and pain tolerances are different, but what should I expect?

  • You shouldn't have pain during, but demand decent drugs for pain afterwards. (They gave me crappy tylenol & codeine and this is how I found out my body doesn't like codeine.) Plus your nasal passages will be completely blocked as well, worst than a bad cold to add to the joy. You'll feel like that commercial where everyone with a cold has this giant head. All I wanted was for the time to go fast.

What else can you expect? After nasal surgery some people find they get colds more often and some develop more allergies for some reason. I almost never get a cold whereas before I'd get a couple per year. However, I discovered I'm allergic to way more things than I was before and I never recovered the keen sense of smell I had before. All these things my doctor told me about in advance.
    • right now I average a cold every two months and I have chronic sinus and ear infections monthly. I have zero drainage and cannot breathe thru my left nostril. Hence why I constantly have a sinus infection.
So it cant be worse than that right?
      • I can't see that you have anything to lose. Good luck.

If your surgeon is also does a lot of cosmetic work they may offer you a major discount on cosmetic work. This should not be taken up lightly. With facial changes also come personality changes. There are psychiatric books written on the subject.

        • this was an interesting article on preparing for surgery www.souledout.org/healing/e...rgery.html

          Highlights

The three areas to focus on for optimal health are attitude, exercise and nutrition. Anyone contemplating surgery can make the procedure easier and improve recovery by making improvements daily in ALL of these areas ahead of time.

          Positive Attitude

After learning that surgery is needed, the first step in maintaining personal power is to lower anxiety about the surgery and create an empowering attitude. This can be done through a daily practice of relaxation and healing imagery. There are many relaxation tapes available, some of which are specifically designed to enhance surgical outcomes. Just 20 minutes of guided deep relaxation is known to boost immune activity and help one become healthier.

Create a circle of support. Ask your family and friends to wrap you in a warm blanket of love and good wishes ~ it gives them something more constructive to do than worry about you.

Anyone facing surgery will want to imagine him or herself in the operating room, with everything proceeding beautifully. In one's mind’s eye at least once daily, imagine the surgeon's operating skillfully while one's own body responds perfectly to all that is required of it. Hold a picture of rapid recovery, comfortable and without bleeding, infection or any complication. Anticipate returning to a normal routine soon afterward. This visualization practice sets the stage to speed recovery, and even reduce the risk of complication.

The most important thing in getting healthy is what you think. If you think you will accomplish your goals, our experience is you are correct.
          • Thanks for the positive info!! I have started visualizing speedy and smooth recovery. I have my mom staying with me to help and my other half is taking a week of work to also cater to me :)
I really am looking forward to resting, taking much needed time off work, catching up on my netflix and tivo programs and reading the 10 books i have next to my bed....hopefully the weather stays nice, I can relax in the sun as well...which always makes me happy!!
        • Nope he is not a cosmetic surgeon, and Im pretty happy with my nose as is. I have very angled and chiseled features, thanks to my native american heritage and I definitely don't want to lose that as thats part of who I am.

Im sure there will be some slight differences, they have to rebuild the bridge on the left side as it's slightly sunken in. Oh man, I hope I don't look like Jennifer Grey after her nose job!!

          Damn welding accident!!
          • I had this surgery when I was 19. Unfortunately, I also had my tonsils out at the same time. I think if I would have had the surgeries one at a time it would have gone much better.

I have never regretted having this done. I'm now 44 and there have been no complicatons and only good results. I used to have constant sinus infections. I think I've had 4 infections in the last 20 years.

You'll be so glad you did this.
            • thanks!! I need to hear positive outcomes, Im so tired of being sick, I cant fly w/o barfing because Im always have an ear infection, and I love traveling.
I also get altitude sickness now which I have never had before. Im so happy Im getting this done.
          • Wow! I always think of Jennifer Grey when I think of nose jobs. She just became another Hollywood face and blended in with all the rest. I still remember her fake American Express commercial on the sitcom show she was on. (She played herself.)

"Do you know me? I found that after surgery for a deviated septum most people don't know me. That's why I carry American Express..."
            • Funny, the surgery I had didn't change my appearance at all. Maybe I should've asked for the VIP package. haha.

Seriously. before the procedure I was sick all the time. After, I rarely have problems. The first good breath was kind of a shock.

Do it, you'll be glad you did.
